About

Hugo Paquete (b. 1979) is a Portuguese multidisciplinary sound artist, researcher, and educator whose work spans electronic and acousmatic music, digital media art, and experimental performance. With more than two decades of activity, his career bridges higher-education teaching, funded research-creation projects, and international presentations at leading institutions and festivals across Europe, North and South America.

Paquete’s work has received international recognition, most notably the Distinction in Interactive Art at the Prix Ars Electronica for Talking Doors (with Julijonas Urbonas, 2010), alongside a Jury Recommendation at the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival (Tokyo, 2010) and an Honorable Mention at the Live 2011 Grand Prix Media Festival (Turku, Finland) and others.

His artistic research consistently integrates institutional frameworks with independent creative freedom, merging intellectual inquiry with hands-on technological experimentation. Functioning as a bridge between public and private domains, his practice establishes intersections between academia, artistic creation, and autonomous research.

Over the past decade, notably during his residency at ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics and the Hertzlab (Germany, 2011–2020), he has developed advanced methodologies in sound design, multichannel spatialization, algorithmic composition, data sonification, and real-time audiovisual interface integration.

This work is financed by national funds through FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., under project UIDB/04019/2020. This event presents acousmatic music compositions from fourteen artists, exploring the concept of hyperobjects through an eight-channel immersive audio system. Featuring works by artists such as João Pedro Oliveira, Manuella Blackburn, and Panayiotis Kokoras among others, the event aims to offer new perspectives on complex phenomena such as climate change, promoting dialogues between science and art. By decoupling sounds from their visual sources, it encourages participants to contemplate abstract concepts beyond immediate human experience, potentially expanding their sensory and intellectual boundaries.

Curatorship of the event "Intertwining Infinities of Humans, Earth, and Sky" integrated in the Negentropy Nexus Residency. Paquete, H., & Kesler, F. (2013–2014). Death Amplitude Synchronization (D.A.S.) – Hyperinstrument for Site-Specific Sound Interaction [Interactive sound installation and performance system]. Developed a custom hyperinstrument integrating environmental sensors, contact microphones, and webcam-based motion tracking to capture chaotic variables (light, vibration, movement). Processed data through a hybrid analog/digital system (Max/MSP, with custom DRK Livecam4 software) for real-time transformation into audio and MIDI, exploring stochastic sound generation and vibrational ontologies. Reverse-engineered and repurposed open-source software (FacetrackNoIR) to translate biological data into MIDI control messages.
